Details about the presentation:
The talk explores the history of global air pollution treaties from their genesis in the 1970s to the present. After successful initiatives begun almost four decades ago, global production of acid rain-causing chemicals, including sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxides, were reduced. However, because the treaties were limited in geographic scope, their global effectiveness is now in doubt. Recent studies suggest that global trends in acid rain-producing chemicals are again on the rise. The talk will focus on the success components present in the earlier treaties and suggest models of effective treaty-making for the future.
